Media Diet: Blog assigment #1

It All Begins Here

Overview: Over the course of 24 hours, we were tasked to keep track of our media usage for this class. As someone who typically consumes a decent amount of media, this seemed relatively daunting. However, I knew it would be a beneficial task in the long run. I was excited to see what I would learn. Let’s see how it went!

8:00 am: When first waking up, I immediately checked snapchat to converse with my friends about a hangout we were planning. I then scrolled on tik tok for roughly 30 minutes. I came across topics such as Dolly Partons’ passing, Olivia Rodrigos new music festival (Daisy Chains), and also life and fitness content. This also led me to other websites, such as dollyparton.com to further my consumption.

8:30 am: I watched a youtube video while getting ready to go see my friends. It was by the creator Lena Lifts, and she was discussing her workout routines as well as how she stays consistent with them. I found this motivating and credible as she linked sources to where she was finding her information for the video. I then went to a farmers market with my friends.

1:00 pm: After returning from the friend hangout, I hopped onto Instagram to repost an image that my friend had taken of us at the farmers market. I then got caught in a doom scroll on the site. I didn’t see much that I wasn’t looking for, as I purposefully looked up fall recipes to write down for future reference. After doing this for about 15 minutes, I decided I needed to do a few hours of school work.

4:00 pm: While doing my work, I listened to spotify the whole time. From Taylor Swift to All-American Rejects, I had plenty of variety. Once I completed school, I got ready to go on a date with my boyfriend.

7:00 pm: After our dinner date, we bought a chess game set from Walmart that we could play once we got home. When we arrived at home, we turned on a youtube video explaining the basics of the game. I found this very helpful as I had never played the game before. We played the game for about two hours while listening to a youtube lofi music playlist.

9:00 pm: We decided to go to bed. Once I was laying down, I wanted to end my day with some Tik Tok. I got caught into a rabbit hole of teachers hating on AI. I was sure to make sure the sources were credible and that I was getting true information. I also found myself agreeing with how they felt about AI. With that, I put my phone down, and went to bed.

Reflection: After fact checking my information, I found that most of it was credible. I found that when I went directly to the source, it was going to be more accurate than the hearsay. For example, when looking into Dolly Partons’ passing, I went directly to her website as well as her friends and families to get factual information. The content I consumed seemed mostly trustworthy, with only a few things catching my attention in a negative light. I also noticed a pattern of the algorithm recommending me more of the content I had viewed in the early hours of the morning later on in the day, and the more I would look into verified sources, the more I would be shown them later on. It is crazy to thing about how connected and intertwined the media really is, and also how much I had consumed in one day.
